SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 3229132 was released on 11.10.2022 and deals with "[CVE-2022-39013] Information Disclosure vulnerability in SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform (Program Objects)" within BI/BO platform. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve information disclosure with a high potential for exploitation in component BI-BIP-ADM.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

This note has been re-released with updated 'Solution’ information. BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform allows attacker authenticated as an administrator to see credentials in clear text or as a normal user in encrypted form. Attaining OS credentials enables the attacker to modify system data and make the system unavailable leading to high impact on confidentiality and low impact on integrity and availability of the application.

Solution

BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform has been updated so that the encrypted password is not returned as a result of the query anymore and is not visible to the end user. Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "There is no proper workaround for this issue. However, the Program Object password can be temporarily set to an empty string until the patch is installed.". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 8.2 score.

SAP BI is a module meant for producing business insights and expands its power in combination with HANA DB and also exists as BW/4 HANA.
