Advisory

SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 3130920 was released on 18.01.2022 and deals with "Remote Code Execution vulnerability associated with Apache Log4j 2 component used in SAP Data Intelligence 3 (on-premise)" within SAP Data Intelligence. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve code injection with a hot news potential for exploitation in component CA-DI-CP.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as monthly patch process.

Risk specification

The component log4j allows an attacker to execute malicious code when he is in control of log messages or message parameter.

Solution

The applications dependencies were updated to a newer release that no longer contains these log4j vulnerabilities.  Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "You can apply the workaround procedure explained in the note.If possible, set the java parameter log4j2.formatMsgNoLookups=true". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 10.0 score.
