Advisory

SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 3025604 was released on 08.06.2021 and deals with "[CVE-2021-33664] Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability within SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP (Applications based on Web Dynpro ABAP)" within ABAP. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve cross-site scripting (xss) with a medium potential for exploitation in component BC-WD-ABA.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround does not exist. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

Missing authority checks are still the most common security defect related to authorizations in custom code. Since SAP uses an explicit authorization model, an authority checks must be coded in order to be executed. If an explicit check is not coded, all users have access. This type of vulnerability not only exists in SAP standard it also exists in customer coding. Check your custom developments for vulnerabilities that pose a risk to your systems. SecurityBridge helps detect code vulnerabilities before they are implemented in production. Cross-site scripting (XSS) is the name of a class of security vulnerabilities that can occur in web-based applications. XSS combines all vulnerabilities that allow an attacker to inject HTML Markup and/or JavaScript into the front end of the affected web application.

XSS attacks can occur whenever the application dynamically creates its HTML/JavaScript/CSS content, which is passed to the user's web browser, and attacker-controlled values are used in this process. If these values are included in the generated code without proper validation and encoding, the attacker is able to include arbitrary coding snippets into the application's front end. The code is then rendered by the victim's web browser and interpreted in the victim's current authentication context.

Risk specification

Application-based on Web Dynpro ABAP does not sufficiently encode user-controlled inputs, resulting in Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability which would allow an authenticated attacker to steal session credentials.

Solution

The newest Unified Rendering release attached in note 209746 and consider exercising manual activities separately for each system this note which you transport the note for implementation.
