Advisory

SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 3001824 was released on 13.04.2021 and deals with "[CVE-2021-21485] Information Disclosure in SAP NetWeaver AS for Java (Telnet Commands)" within Java. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve information disclosure with a high potential for exploitation in component BC-JAS-COR.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

Information disclosure is when an application fails to properly protect sensitive and confidential information from parties that are not supposed to have access to the subject matter in normal circumstances.
Carefully review every information disclosure vulnerablity in regards to disclosure obligations post-GDPR for ‘Personal data’ under the Data Protection Act 2018.

Risk specification

An unauthorized attacker may be able to entice an administrator to invoke telnet commands of an SAP NetWeaver Application Server for Java that allow the attacker to gain NTLM hashes of a privileged user.

Solution

SAP NetWeaver Application Server for Java now properly validates the telnet commands.  Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "Disable outgoing NTLM traffic by group policy or block outgoing SMB requests via appropriate firewall rules. For Unix-like OS's disable Samba protocol on all the hosts in the cluster.". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 7.4 score.

Affected System

SAP Netweaver Application Server Java is part of the SAP NetWeaver Application Platform. It provides the complete infrastructure for deploying and running Java applications.
