Advisory

The advisory for ABAP adresses a "[CVE-2020-6296] Code Injection Vulnerability in SAP NetWeaver (ABAP) and ABAP Platform". SAP Note 2941667 was released on 11.08.2020 and should be implemented during monthly patch process . The implementation demands a downtime. Component BC-ABA-SC has a high risk of exploitation, according to the manufacturers security and response team.

Following the SAP Security Advisory team, a workaround does not exist.

Risk specification

The batch input recorder report RSBDCREC is executable without an appropriate authorization check, allowing an authenticated attacker to inject code into the system.

Solution

The transaction SHDB (= report RSBDCREC) now checks for authorization object S_DEVELOP with parameters OBJTYPE=PROG, OBJNAME=, and ACTVT=01 and verifies the system and client settings when you generate a BDC program. Therefore, you cannot use this function in a production system anymore (which was not recommended anyway).

SAP NetWeaver Application Server (formally known as SAP Web Application Server) is a building block of SAP NetWeaver. It is the foundation for most software products developed by SAP SE. SAP NetWeaver systems exist with Java and/or ABAP stacks. The advisory could be relevant for single and dual-stack ABAP installations.
