Advisory

A note with CVSS 5.4 for component BI-BIP-INV was released by SAP on 14.07.2020. The correction/advisory 2912708 was described with "[CVE-2020-6278] Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SAP Business Objects Business Intelligence Platform (BI Launchpad and CMC)" and affects the system type BI/BO platform.

A workaround exists, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

The vulnerability addressed is Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) within BI/BO platform.

Cross-site scripting (XSS) is the name of a class of security vulnerabilities that can occur in web-based applications. XSS combines all vulnerabilities that allow an attacker to inject HTML Markup and/or JavaScript into the front end of the affected web application.

XSS attacks can occur whenever the application dynamically creates its HTML/JavaScript/CSS content, which is passed to the user's web browser, and attacker-controlled values are used in this process. If these values are included in the generated code without proper validation and encoding, the attacker is able to include arbitrary coding snippets into the application's front end. The code is then rendered by the victim's web browser and interpreted in the victim's current authentication context.

Risk specification

BI Launchpad and CMC in SAP Business Objects Business Intelligence Platform allows an authenticated attacker to embed mailicious scripts in the application while uploading images, which gets executed when the victim opens these files, leading to stored XSS.

Solution

SAP Business Intelligence Platform now checks uploaded files against a list of allowed filetypes and MIME types to prevent this type of attack  Although an alternative solution exists, it is advisable to apply the correction! This is the workaround, which was suggested by the SAP security experts: "Cross-site scripting/request forgery filter engine on IDS/IPS/firewall systems. ".

Affected System

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence suite is an analytics platform allowing SAP customers to make better decisions based on their business data. SAP BI is a module meant for producing business insights and expands its power in combination with HANA DB and also exists as BW/4 HANA. Due to processing sensitive business data, the Data security is of utmost importance.
