Advisory

SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 2838835 was released on 11.02.2020 and deals with "[CVE-2020-6190]Information Disclosure in SAP NetWeaver AS Java (Heap Dump Application)" within Java. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve information disclosure with a medium potential for exploitation in component BC-JAS-ADM-ADM.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

Information disclosure is when an application fails to properly protect sensitive and confidential information from parties that are not supposed to have access to the subject matter in normal circumstances.
Carefully review every information disclosure vulnerablity in regards to disclosure obligations post-GDPR for ‘Personal data’ under the Data Protection Act 2018.

Risk specification

An unauthenticated attacker could read sensitive data from the SAP NetWeaver AS Java Heap dump application if a heap dump analysis has been performed on it.

Solution

This note diables the Heap Dump application so that it is no longer accessible.  Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "As soon as you do not need Heap Dump data anymore, you can and should delete the Heap Dump files. You find these files with extension .dmp or .hprof usually in folder /usr/sap/<SID>/<InstID>/j2ee/cluster/server<N>/ where N is the server node number.". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 5.3 score.

Affected System

SAP Netweaver Application Server Java is part of the SAP NetWeaver Application Platform. It provides the complete infrastructure for deploying and running Java applications.
